Posted on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 02:38 pm ET
The Census Bureau recently released an early version of table P42 from the 2010 Census Summary File 1, showing population counts for seven types of group quarters. The institutionalized group quarters categories include correctional facilities for adults, juvenile facilities, nursing facilities/skilled-nursing facilities and other institutional facilities; while the noninstitutionalized group quarters categories include college/university student housing, military quarters and other noninstitutional facilities.
Below is an extract of this data for Allegheny County in 2010, along with the comparable data from 2000. Overall, the group quarters population in Allegheny County decreased by 5,563 individuals, a 13.7% decline. At the same time, the population in college or university student housing increased by over 25%, from 13,941 in 2000 to 17,469 in 2010. The population in nursing facilities declined by 34% over the decade.
