Overview: |
The Geriatric Education Center of Pennsylvania (GEC/PA) is a consortium of The University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University, and Temple University. The mission of the GEC/PA is to provide various educational programs to healthcare professionals in the areas of elder care issues.
The five statutory purposes that drive the GEC program serve as a basis for each project described in this proposal. Overall, this project consists of 9 specific projects that support 6 primary objectives. These projects address the following statutory purposes: (1) Improve Training: projects have been developed to enhance clinical training in geriatric mental health of primary care providers through collaborative training programs with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and the University of Pittsburgh; didactic and web-based interactive training will be provided throughout the state; (2) Develop and Disseminate Curricula: projects have been developed to establish educational modules for an online distance learning system and new curriculum modules in geriatric mental health for in-person training for diverse health care professionals; (3) Faculty Training: intensive leadership training for the next generation of leaders in geriatric health education and research at each of the three participating universities will be implemented; (4) Continuing Education: community linkages and collaborative partnerships have been developed in collaboration with organizations involved in training health professionals for work in both rural and urban medically underserved areas; and (5) Clinical Training: opportunities will be provided for student clinical training in long-term care and community programs that serve older adults with mental health problems.
