Characterizing the Experience of Alzheimer's Disease (CEAD)

Principal Investigator:  Richard Schulz, Gerontology, UCSUR
  Funder:  Alzheimer's Association
Period:  September 2007 to June 2010
Overview:  This study is the first to attempt a comprehensive assessment of suffering in patients with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (ADRD), and the impact of patients' suffering on family caregivers. Based on a model of patient suffering within a caregiver stress health framework, this longitudinal study will collect objective, structured and open-ended data from 105 community-dwelling caregiver/ADRD patient dyads at two intervals, one year apart. Assessment instruments will be evaluated for validity and reliability. Changes in suffering over a one year period will be analyzed, as will the association between changes in suffering and changes in patient functional and cognitive status. Multivariable regression analyses will be used to identify predictors of patient suffering and predictors of caregiver burden and depression.
